I suffered for three years with horrible right hip pain, had a right hip resurface 1/03/2011 left the hospital two days later walking with a walker for one day. I then used a cane for three days walking 2 miles finally in April worked up to 35 to 50 miles a week. I advised DR Pritchett I had run over 80,000 miles in my life, although 61 still wanted to run. He had me wait until labor day since then I run 3 miles EOD with no pain. I was advised in Tacoma to have a full hip and never run again, thanks Dr Pritchett for giving me my life back the way I want to live it! I am pictured in Salzburg Austria enjoying a PAIN FREE vacation. A little beer but no Advil since February!

Right Hip ResurfacingI was extremely frustrated because I could not find a surgeon to help me with my crippling arthritis and strong metal allergies. I was told by everyone else I saw that my only option was a total hip replacement. I was afraid. I was offered a plastic socket and ceramic ball. I would still have a metal stem in my femur and there would be metal backing of my socket. You placed ceramic coated resurfacing implants with a cross linked polyethylene socket liner. I have no pain and no worries. I can do anything I want. Thanks for everyting Dr. Pritchett you were my last hope!

Shoulder and Hip ResurfacingDr. Pritchett: Thanks for fixing my hip. I was able to lead our trip following the long horn sheep. We did not anticipate this need but I was able to keep ahead of a grizzly bear so I can definitely move fast!

Hip ResurfacingEvery surgeon told me I was crazy to have a hip implant at 29 years old. I could not have a metal implant so the cementless, ceramic coated resurfacing implant was my choice. Everyone told me the polyethylene would never last but I dance and exercise every day and after 13 years there is no sign of any wear! After years of suffering I am grateful to have a full and active life!

Hip ResurfacingDr. Pritchett performed a hip resurfacing in mid September and after an overnight stay was sent home. On October 31 I skated with minor discomfort and played hockey at the end of November. Awesome outcome and could not be happier with the operation and the care and attention from all his staff.

Hip ReplacementDr. Pritchett did a R TKR on me 8 years ago, using the Zimmer High-Flex components, and I have full ROM and full function. I has severely disabled before the procedure, and now I don’t even think about that knee. Soon he will do a R THR on me, and I know I’m in the best possible hands. I have total faith in him and wouldn’t go anywhere else! Thank you, Dr. Pritchett, was being such a dedicated surgeon and great human being!!

Hip ResurfacingHi Dr. Pritchett: It’s been a while, but just wanted to send you a note with an update on how I’m doing. I’m now 12 1/2 years into my first hip resurfacing and 4 1/2 years into my second one. Every day I think to myself how lucky I am. I’ve now finished 5 ironman triathlons, untold how many other races, rides, hikes, and runs, but most importantly, I can still chase my kiddo around with the best of them. Thank you for everything. Best, Paul

Bilateral Hip ResurfacingI just want to say THANK You to Dr. Pritchett. I was a 34 year old in the ARMY that was at my ropes end. The ARMY had me on Vicodin for 6 years as a solution. The ARMY surgeons said my only option was a total hip replacement. I found the BHR online and knew it was for me. I did not want to be stuck to walking for the rest of my life. I was too active and fit to want to give that up. I am here to tell you immediately after waking from the surgery I was pain free. It was a long road to recovery, but at 9 months post op I squatted 315 for 2 reps. I am running again after not being able to since 2012. I am slowly getting better and better. I will be forever grateful of how great Dr. Pritchett has been. He has excellent bed side manner and took amazing care of me. He said I was the hardest surgery he ever performed. Well it was a success and my opportunities are endless. I don’t believe there is a finer surgeon out there for this procedure. And for all of you who are waiting to get it done, don’t wait! You will return to better than you ever were. Thank You Dr. Pritchett!

Birmingham Hip ResurfacingI am a 62 y.o. female runner, whose left hip was resurfaced by Dr. Pritchett a year ago. Several months ago, I successfully resumed running and have led my age group in two recent 5K runs with times of 24:51 and 24:23! My training runs average 4-6 miles; the longest, so far, has been 7 miles. While other surgeons rejected me for resurfacing due to my age and gender, Dr. Pritchett was willing to go ahead based on my bone density and overall health. He has brought me back to the sport I love! Thank you, Dr. Pritchett!

Left Hip ResurfacingOne final shout out to Dr. Pritchett. We reached to summits of both Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier on Tuesday and my hip never once gave me any problems. We climbed 11,000 vertical feet over three days. Scott

Adventure Sports Hip ReplacementI had an S shaped 70 degree scoliosis. I was told most of my spine needed to be fused. You were able to fuse just the upper curve and the lower curve gradually went away. I have had a completely normal life for the last 30 years-including sports. Thank you Dr. Pritchett for doing what others couldn’t and 30 years of a great life.

Scoliosis FusionOn June 29, 2020 I had hip resurfacing surgery at the Swedish hip institute. Dr. Pritchett clearly explained everything at our very first consultation. The surgery was an amazing success! I had severe osteoarthritis and no cartilage in my right hip. Walking with a cane was even a challenge, even driving was a challenge. And now after eight weeks I’m able to do squats leg press Things that I was not able to do one year ago. Dr. Pritchetts entire team was amazing. If you’re looking for the most expert brilliant surgeon to perform this procedure, Dr. James Pritchett should be your surgeon. Thank you. Talman Welle

Hip Resurfacing SurgeryI would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Pritchett for accepting me as an elder female patient, and for his successful hip resurfacing surgery in late September 2023. We live in California and travelled to Dr. Pritchett’s Seattle office, and are so happy we did. Everything went extremely smoothly and we couldn’t be happier with the results. I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am to him for the surgery and exceptional care he has given to me! And I thank him for his tremendous skill in performing my operation. He is truly a lifesaver. I still remember the day when I was laid on the bed, pushed into the surgery room in the morning of September 26th. It was one of the toughest times of my life. His personal attention and kindness helped me overcome my fears about the surgery. During my follow up visit, he made me believe that I can be fully recovered in a few weeks. Now that I am nearly four weeks from my surgery, I am getting better and stronger every day, I can truly say I wish I had done it sooner. I had been so stressed for so long and it was really starting to affect every aspect of my life. I am deeply appreciative to Dr. Pritchett for giving me my life back! Because of his expert care, I now have hope for the future. I also appreciate everyone else who helped me in Dr. Pritchett’s office, and would like to especially thank Nurse Susan. Susan is always very kind, helpful, knowledgeable, informative and super speedy in responding to inquiries. She also went above and beyond and helped me out with recommendations for pharmacies, transportation, and even hotel suggestions. With her consistent dedication… she made the whole process a breeze; especially since we were from out of state. Thank you again, Dr. Pritchett for all your care! I appreciate you and your care more than I can express! And I am looking forward to your care of my other hip!

EI
Hip SurgeryDr. Pritchett – Thank you so much for my very successful hip resurfacing surgery (Oct. 2022, Left Hip). My new hip is working great and I am back to my regular outdoor activities of trail hiking, yard work, lap swimming, etc. I’m sure you’ve heard this many times before, but I don’t think I can emphasize just how significant my new hip has been for me both mentally and physically – and for this I am very grateful. I feel that hip resurfacing was the best choice for me as I am still relatively young (65) and also physically very active, and my new resurfaced hip is functioning and feeling basically like my hip before arthritis set in. The supportive care provided by Swedish Orthopedic Institute (SOI) was pretty amazing and the supporting team and facilities at SOI on surgery day was top notch. The preparatory materials provided by you and SOI were excellent and really helped me prepare for the surgery. Overall, I feel that I’ve received probably some of the best care available in the country to correct my hip osteoarthritis in my left hip. So – thank you very much Dr. Pritchett. I am very grateful to have had you for my surgeon. I’ve got my life back!

Left Hip Resurfacing Oct 2022I was told my only option was a reverse total shoulder replacement. Doctor Pritchett was able to solve my problem by resurfacing my humeral head. I can do everything again including playing squash. Quite amazing! I am so happy I chose Dr. Pritchett!

Complex ShoulderDr. Pritchett: I wanted to let you know that I won a professional golf tournament just seven months after your resurfaced my shoulder. I had been told by several other surgeons that my career was over. I can’t thank you enough. I am playing better than ever.

Shoulder ResurfacingI had both my hips resurfaced with the Depuy ASR. When my hip implants were recalled the only option I was offered was removal of my entire resurfacing implants and placement of complete total hip replacements. I am so glad I did not do that and I found you instead. You were able to revise my recalled ASR hip socket on my left hip to a new polyethylene socket. I had a very easy recovery and I was able to keep all my bone and my existing resurfacing femur. I can do anything I want now including all my sports. You were the only one that had any experience with my problem and I am grateful for your creativity. I am coming back for my right side in a few months.

Andy P
Revision of ASR Hip ResurfacingFor the first time in my life I can walk, run and move normally. I was able to have children and now can keep up with them in all their sports and activities. Because of child bearing I was advised not have a metal on metal hip resurfacing but Dr. Pritchett found a way to give me a ceramic on polyethylene hip resurfacing. I had a limp all my life but now its gone along with the pain. My life is normal in every way. Thank you

Bilateral Hip ResurfacingI just completed a 150 mile bike ride and hiked and climbed the South Summit of The Brothers Mountain. My hip felt good.

Hip ResurfacingThanks for the left thumb implant. This works many times better than the tendon they used on my right thumb. I have much better strength on my left side and I have the power to do anything I want now. I wish I had two of the thumbs implants.

Thumb ImplantAfter years of having a deformed knee and terrific grinding I now have a straight knee and a smooth feeling. I can ski all day. I won our racket ball event and I have moved on to singles tennis events from holding my partner back in doubles. Your skill and my Persona Knee are the reason and I am thankful every day.

Hip ResurfacingI’ll never find a surgeon I trust more than Dr. Pritchett. We diagnosed my first hip replacement in 2006 and then my second one in 2013. In both cases, I made a complete recovery and have been able to do the impossible every day. Now, with both hips replaced, I am a two-time Ironman triathlon finisher. Thanks Dr. Pritchett & Susan!

2006, bilateral hip replacement 2013I just wanted to pass on my gratitude to Dr. Pritchett and his team for giving me my mobility and strength back. Physical activity plays a big role in my life and I am so glad I made the choice to have the procedure done with Dr. Pritchett

Bilateral Hip ResurfacingI had Bi lateral hip resurfacing surgeries using ceramic coated implants and cross linked polyethylene insert with Dr. Pritchett. The right hip procedure was on June 14, 2016 and the left hip was performed on July 26,2016. I traveled from Central Florida area to Seattle after extensive research and various email conversations with Dr. Pritchett. My conclusion after reading many studies, is Dr. Pritchett is the best resurfacing surgeon and uses the best implants. Therefore, it was a simple and easy decision of long term benefit versus short term inconvenience. Both surgeries were performed without any complications and the pain level was less then I was previously experiencing. The medical staff at Swedish Orthopedic are top notch and very committed to providing excellent patient care. I did not need to take any pain medication after leaving the hospital on both occasions. Most orthopedic surgeons will try to discourage their patients from having resurfacing surgery and do not provide all the clinical facts. I have been told there is a high failure rate and the patient does not recover as well as total hip replacement surgery. However, the studies I have read prove differently and the failure rate is due to surgeon inexperience with this procedure. I have read that in the first 100 procedures the failure rate can be as high as 25% and it takes approximately 300 procedures for the surgeon to become proficient at this technique. This is where Dr. Pritchett really shines amongst his peers, with more then 4500 procedures. The implants he uses are the very best with ceramic coating instead of metal on metal and The Holy Grail is the Cross Linked Polyethylene Insert that prevents the implants from touching and functions as a cartilage. Additionally, the physical limitations that total hip replacement surgery has compared to No limitations after the first six weeks from hip resurfacing surgery. Dr. Pritchett strongly advocates that you can perform any physical activity you are comfortable with and does not restrict activities. Dr. Pritchett is not only a very skilled and experienced world class surgeon, he is a very compassionate person. Even though he has a quiet demeanor , he is very passionate in providing the best results for his patients. I am very thankful for what Dr. Pritchett has done for me and I am looking forward to resuming my very physically active life style that has been hindered by my severe Bi lateral hip degeneration. If you are considering hip, knee or shoulder surgery, speak to Dr. Pritchett before you make a decision on another surgeon, you will be very glad you did!

Freedom Hip ReplacementEvery day is wonderful. Your team is great to work with. Susan made the process easy for me coming from out of state. I am so grateful you took my difficult case, were able to fix my hip and that your research over the years allowed the technology to be available for me.

Complex Hip ResurfacingI had a right THR (superior method) on July 9, 2018. This picture was taken 17 days later. I started playing golf again 5 weeks after surgery. I am amazed at how fast I recovered and have recommended Dr. Pritchett to several friends who are having hip issues. I am definitely a satisfied patient and would not hesitate to have another procedure with Dr. Pritchett.

Total Hip ReplacementDr. Pritchett has performed two complete knee replacements for me. The first at the end of 2011 and the second at the end of 2013. Eight months after the second operation I was hiking in Switzerland. In 2016, at 71, I hiked the 26 mile Inca Trail to Machu Picchu over four days. I hike and bike to my hearts content and feel that Dr Pritchett’s skill combined with ongoing Pilates conditioning has been key to my recovery and active lifestyle today

2 Complete Knee ReplacementsI interviewed 3 orthopedists across the US before my hip resurfacing, and decided on Dr. Pritchett. Now, 2 years later, I am so happy with that decision. I’m in my 60s, and I spent a lot of time this summer in the mountains – hiking, running, and biking. Soon I’ll strap on snowshoes and skis. Before my surgery, it hurt to get out of a car. The staff at Swedish, and Susan, Dr. Pritchett’s assistant, helped make the procedure easy-peazy, even during the middle of COVID, even though I live in Colorado. Hats off to them too. Thanks all, for giving me back my active life.

Hip ResurfacingYou will not find a better Orthopedic Surgeon anywhere. Dr. Pritchett is simply the best, most skilled, experienced and talented surgeon in the country. People come from all over the USA and internationally to Seattle to have Dr. Pritchett perform surgical procedures. Dr. Pritchett has performed 3 surgeries for me over the past 17 years. If there was ever a post-surgical issue I was experiencing, Dr. Pritchett personally and immediately took care of it. I had my most recent procedure in January 2024. My recovery was nothing short of miraculous as I was already easing my way back into my normal daily activities, including going to the gym, in just 2 weeks after my surgery. My surgical scar has also healed very quickly. I diligently did all of the post surgical exercises starting on day 1 of the surgery – this is very important to a successful recovery! After just the second post-surgical day, I was able to manage my pain with just Aleve and Tylenol. Dr. Pritchett’s medical assistant, Susan Knudson, is also incredible. Susan has been with Dr. Pritchett for the past 20 years. Susan is very kind, responsive and extremely knowledgeable in providing information and answers to all aspects of pre-surgical & post-surgical questions needed by Dr. Pritchett’s patients. Thank you Dr. Pritchett (and Susan) for giving me back the quality of life I so desperately needed. You are the best!!

Hip resurfacing – Revision Hip ProthesisDr. Pritchett, Just wanted to say thank you again for your work on my hips. If you recall, you resurfaced both of my hips, left in 2013 and right in 2019. I am doing great and I am scheduled to compete in Mongolia in October. The article below has some details. Feel free to use it as a testimonial to your amazing work! I can’t thank you enough. Hip ResurfacingI had a rod that could not be removed blocking my femur. My surgeon could not perform a badly needed hip replacement. My only and last hope was Dr. Pritchett. He was able to perform a hip resurfacing and IT WORKED!

DJ
Hip Resurfacing with Blocked FemurThirty years ago I became paralyzed when my spine collapsed by a tumor in three of my vertebrae. I was told there was no solution by several neurosurgeons. My oncologist had hip surgery with Dr. Pritchett and called him to ask if he knew of any solution. Dr. Pritchett took my case himself and made artificial vertebrae out of bone cement with a metal rod as “rebar”. I recovered and have a normal life. This is a “miracle”. I am so thankful for Dr. Pritchett’s creativity.

Maryilynn D
Artificial VertebraeI had my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Pritchett on June 16, 2020. In four month time I was cleared for “ALL ACTIVITIES”. I am back to playing my favorite sport “Singles Racquetball”. I now have two perfectly functioning hips. Thank you Dr. Prichett.
